Measure Exact Dimensions

Use the actual outer dimensions of your packaged goods, including padding, shrink wrap, and pallet overhang. Even 1cm can change CBM significantly.

Know Your Divisor

CBM (cubic meter) is the standard unit of volume for freight. For each package, the formula is: Length(cm) × Width(cm) × Height(cm) × Quantity ÷ 1,000,000 = CBM. For example, a 40×30×25 cm box × 10 pcs = 0.30 CBM (40×30×25×10 ÷ 1,000,000).

CBM is the actual volume in cubic meters. Volumetric weight converts that volume into a weight equivalent using a divisor: CBM × 1000 = kg (with ÷5000 divisor). Carriers charge by the greater of actual weight or volumetric weight. A 0.5 CBM shipment = 250 kg volumetric weight (air) or 300 kg (sea).

Air freight uses ÷5000 because aircraft cargo space is limited and expensive. Sea freight uses ÷6000 as vessels have more space. Road freight often uses ÷4000. Higher divisors favor bulky shipments; lower divisors penalize them more heavily.

The calculator computes total volumetric weight (CBM × divisor factor) and compares it to the actual total weight. The carrier will charge for the higher value. For example, 20 kg actual weight vs 35 kg volumetric → you pay for 35 kg. Heavy compact cargo pays by actual; light bulky cargo pays by volume.
